Comments on: Ayahuasca: A Skeptic’s Notes make the most of your dose Sun, 04 Feb 2018 03:07:00 +0000 hourly 1 By: Wes Hansen Tue, 02 Jan 2018 22:00:00 +0000 One final comment for clarity. Ontologically speaking there is no difference between Nirvana and Samsara; the birth/death cycle exists in Nirvana same as in Samsara, the difference being, a sentient being who manifests in Nirvana, i.e. a Buddha, does not succumb to the illusion of the time-bound self because their awareness, hence, their system of epistemology, is grounded in the realization of their own infinite duration, their own eternal nature. The mind is liberated in the Great Unborn Expanse and what it’s liberated from is the ignorance which sustains the illusion. And every spiritual tradition says the exact same thing!

Returning to the Judeo-Christian metaphor, the Tree of Knowledge and the Tree of Life both exist in the one-same Garden, the difference being, the Tree of Knowledge, having succumbed to the illusion, fails to recognize the Garden for what it is; its awareness, hence, its system of epistemology, is grounded in Fear and Desire, the guardians at the gate. For a more faithful metaphor, the Tree of Knowledge should be depicted on the same side of the gate as the flaming sword and the guardians. The gate, in this metaphor, represents the Heart Chakra. In the Chakra system there are three “profane” Chakras below the Heart center and three “divine” Chakras above; these Chakras are correlated with one another – the base of the spine with the throat, the sex organs with the pineal gland, and the solar plexus with the crown. When the Serpent Power is concentrated below the Heart center we manifest in ignorance, when above in Wisdom.

When the Kundalini actually awakens, the earliest indicator is a tingling in the lower extremities followed immediately by an intense erection; as the Kundalini rises one feels a warmth moving up the torso and bodily awareness below the warmth seems to expand asymptotically. At the pineal gland one experiences rapid eye movement and it is best, when just beginning, to use a Mandala or equivalent to lock the gaze so this doesn’t happen, since it can cause the Kundalini to fall back dormant.

The Sikhs of India have a very well developed Kundalini yoga designed specifically to induce this experience. In the Vajrayana tradition, which I practice, we use tummo yoga. Tummo yoga, like all Vajrayana practice, utilizes a great deal of visualization and is practiced in conjunction with deity yoga, so to practice tummo one must receive an empowerment from a lineage holder, i.e. a guru.

Harvard cardiologist, Herbert Benson, and his former grad student, Sara Lazar, have studied Kundalini and tummo yogins/yoginis in considerable depth ( Benson placed tummo yogins in a room maintained at 40 degrees and draped bed-sheets soaked in ice water over their torso and each yogin dried three bed-sheets in succession using nothing but the heat generated by tummo. Western medical science is unable to explain this phenomena; Benson’s explanation is that the yogins are somehow able to access energy from brown fatty deposits much like hibernating bears. Given the caloric content of brown fat and the substantial calories necessary to perform the feat, one would think that these yogins would lose an easily detectable amount of weight; but, of course, since Wikipedia tells us there is no scientific evidence for subtle energies, the brown fatty hypothesis must be true!

In his Psycho-Energetic science, Will Tiller uses Gauge Theory as a mathematical analogy. Both Quantum Electro-dynamics and Quantum Chromo-dynamics, which comprise the Standard Model of particle physics, are Quantum Field Theories and all such theories are Gauge theories. Physicists use Gauge theory because it facilitates the interaction of both global and local symmetries. A symmetry in mathematics is a transformation which leaves the mathematical structure being transformed invariant, i.e. the same. In physics, these symmetries often represent constraints on the physical system at effective energies; for instance, both conservation of energy and conservation of momentum are represented by symmetries. Symmetries can be both hidden and revealed; for instance, according to the Standard Model, at very high energies and prior to interacting with the Higgs field, all sub-atomic particles have the same mass. This is a symmetry since at these high energies one can interchange particles and the system remains invariant. At a certain energy threshold, the particle fields interact with the Higgs field, the symmetry is hidden (broken), and the particles obtain their distinct masses.

The Higgs particle is a gauge boson, a mathematical entity required to make the Gauge theory work. In Will Tiller’s theory, the coupler mechanism he names the deltron is a gauge boson which reveals symmetry rather than hiding it! Essentially what we do when we engage the flaming sword, is we increase the density of deltrons in our immediate environment past a certain threshold and this enables the raising of the gauge symmetry state of our acupuncture meridian system. This is what enables the Siddhi Powers, such as the heat generated during tummo.

In closing, I myself am an agent of La Madre and have been for many lifetimes. I used deity yoga to establish my relationship with La Madre but La Madre is La Madre! My true name, the Medicine name She bestowed upon me, is Walks With Turtle ( I enjoyed the article and especially appreciated the truthfulness, something this world could use more of in my opinion!

By: Wes Hansen Tue, 02 Jan 2018 21:43:00 +0000 Well thank you for that! I feel a great deal better now although I had to run a systems check on my own paranoia generator – maybe I’ve been hanging out on the science blogs a bit too much! Some of them can be rather discourteous when it comes to contrary viewpoints! I am going to post a clarifying comment related to previous which also contains a couple of links; hopefully it comes through . . .

By: Psychedelic Frontier Sat, 30 Dec 2017 21:00:00 +0000 Hi Wes, Thanks for your thoughtful comments. I assure you I don’t object to either of your comments! I just checked Disqus and your previous comment had been automatically marked as spam — I suspect because it contained so many links. I’ve reinstated it.

I’m the editor and not the author of this article, but to answer your question I have not read The Embodied Mind and I was also unaware of Will Tiller’s work. Looks like a lot to investigate here!

By: Wes Hansen Sat, 30 Dec 2017 20:10:00 +0000 Well, I’m highly interested in why, exactly, you moderated my comment!?! What part of it did you find offensive – the ontic argument perhaps? I’ve been following your blog for awhile and I know you take issue with Terrence McKenna’s stuff. I was just trying to be helpful to the author and everything in my comment was true; I’ve been a practicing Buddhist for 20+ years including maintaining celibacy (just this lifetime) and to say that life CAUSES death is just wrong. It is proper, from the conventional perspective to say that life and death are co-dependent arising, since not life implies death and vice versa – conceptually, they depend on one another; however, once you introduce CAUSE into the discussion you enter the realm of karma and karmically speaking life/death only has meaning in the realm of samsaric existence – by definition samsaric existence is cyclic existence, the cycle being birth/death, and samsaric existence is CAUSED by ignorance.

Perhaps it’s a brother-battle issue; I know Will Tiller’s work makes those on the opposing side of the battle uncomfortable. But the experimental evidence would seem to indicate that the epistemic argument and everything dependent on it (string “theory”/M-“theory”, Big Bang Cosmology) is bunk! Why do you think the scientific establishment is going all out to suppress the Pre-stimulus and related data all the while promoting the oxymoron called “Post-Empirical Science!?!” I mean, read Will Tiller’s Wikipedia page – one paragraph; he made his name in condensed matter and now works in subtle energy research. Subtle energy is hyperlinked to a page which claims there is no scientific evidence for subtle energies and references two books; why don’t they be at least a little bit truthful, say it’s an open question, and reference all the relevant literature? Probably they don’t for the same reason you moderated my comment.

I’m assuming you know what the ontic/epistemic argument is all about . . .

By: Nicholas Floyd Sat, 30 Dec 2017 07:47:00 +0000 Good read. I share some of the same sentiments, even after spending about two weeks in the Peruvian Amazon partaking in traditional, legitimate Ayahuasca ceremonies. Life-changing experience for sure, and by far the deepest introspection I’ve ever achieved, but there were some serious distractions (including the shamans themselves) that kept pulling me out of it.

I wrote a whole book about it, called Seven Nights with Ayahuasca. Let me know if you’re interested. I’d be happy to send a copy to you.

By: Wes Hansen Thu, 28 Dec 2017 22:28:00 +0000 To the author:

The cause of death is not life, rather, it’s ignorance; this is the basic understanding of Karma! This is what it means to transform the Tree of Knowledge into the Tree of Life or to Awaken the Kundalini – the Serpent in the Tree, and this is a psycho-physiological transformation. When we take rebirth into this realm, due to past ignorance, we lose touch with our timeless nature and we construct a time-bound reference point for a system of epistemology; this, of course, in Western science, is called the ego – the Tree of Knowledge. We become attached to this time-bound ego which leads to fear of ego death and desire for ego life – the guardians at the gate.

At some point, often due to some traumatic experience, we start to question the veracity of this ego, we encounter the Cartesian anxiety. If our Karma is right, we take up the flaming sword, the sword of death and discrimination – spiritual discipline. We use the sword of death and discrimination to discriminate between the temporal and the eternal which enables us to overcome the guardians, fear and desire, hence enabling the slaying of the time-bound ego, the Tree of Knowledge. When we accomplish this we once again encounter our true nature, our timeless nature, which has never been born and shall never die; we are reborn as the Tree of Life! Our reference point for a system of epistemology is now of a timeless nature, free from ignorance, and, free from death!

Since you seem to appreciate science, there is a scientific basis for this. In the following two experiments (notice that the following results are from the USA National Institutes of Health):

Electrophysiological evidence of intuition: part 1. The surprising role of the heart (;

Electrophysiological evidence of intuition: Part 2. A system-wide process? (;

which are both part of this meta-analysis:

Predictive Physiological Anticipation Preceding Seemingly Unpredictable Stimuli: A Meta-Analysis (;

it is demonstrated irrefutably that the human heart and brain become aware of an emotionally stimulating event roughly 4.5 seconds prior to said event happening! In subsequent experiments, utilizing a slightly different methodology (, pre-stimulus response occurred 12 – 14 seconds prior to event occurrence! This is clearly a type of Extra-Sensory Perception representing a Faster Than Light transmission of information, hence, seemingly in violation of Relativity. How is this possible?

I would suggest reading two papers by Stanford’s William Tiller:

Why the Last Century’s Quantum Mechanics (QM) is Irrelevant in a Duplex, Reciprocal Subspace, Reference Frame for Our Cognitive World (;

What is Human Consciousness and How Do We Significantly Increase Its Magnitude in Our World? (

I am also curious as to whether you have read the book, “The Embodied Mind: Cognitive Science and Human Experience” ( It was originally issued by MIT in 1991 but, to demonstrate its continued relevance, they recently re-issued a revised edition. If you haven’t read it, it could help you with your belief/dependency dilemma.

To the blog moderator:

In the event you are unaware and may be interested, the Mind and Life Institute recently started MindRxiv, a pre-print archive for research on the mind and contemplative practices which is hosted by the Center for Open Science (; in addition, they have a really nice discussion of open science on their blog (

I wonder if after the experience, you would now agree with me that the helicopter-ride putdown, of psychedelic means, shows a lack of understanding? I linked your article to my Institute for the Advancement of Psychedelic Christianity website: and have some further comments there.
