As a self-proclaimed fan of Terence McKenna’s lectures and Rick Strassman’s DMT studies, with interests ranging from modern physics to religion and cosmology, Sturgill Simpson is not your average country singer. The lyrics of the opening track to his latest album, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, prove as much:

There’s a gateway in our mind that leads somewhere out there beyond this plane
Where reptile aliens made of light cut you open and pull out all your pain.
Tell me how you make illegal something that we all make in our brain?
Some say you might go crazy but then again it might make you go sane.

Whoa, what? Sounds an awful lot like DMT. And not just the lyrics, but the whole track has a psychedelic vibe, complete with echoes and a spacey Mellotron. Psych-country has been done before, but it’s never been as explicit — nor, I’d argue, as catchy.

Just a Wee Bit More About DMT, by Nick Sand http://psychedelicfrontier.com/just-wee-bit-more-dmt-nick-sand/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/just-wee-bit-more-dmt-nick-sand/#comments Tue, 08 Jul 2014 11:45:21 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3243 Just a Wee Bit More About DMT, by Nick Sand

Nick Sand is one of the most prolific and well-known underground chemists in history. Along with Tim Scully, Nick Sand was responsible for producing over 3 million hits of Orange Sunshine, a brand of LSD that was renowned for its purity in the Sixties.

Sand has a particular fondness for DMT. In fact, it was a DMT vision quest in the 60s that convinced Sand to dedicate his life to producing and distributing entheogens. He was the first underground chemist to synthesize DMT rather than extracting it from natural sources, and the first person to discover that the DMT freebase could be smoked.

This essay, Just a Wee Bit More About DMT, was originally published in The Entheogen Review in 2001 (PDF copy here). It is a follow-up to Sand’s first DMT essay, this time focusing on the finer points of set, setting, of intention.

Nick Sand is one of the most prolific and well-known underground chemists in history. From 1966 to 1996, he produced huge amounts of LSD, as well as MDMA, synthetic mescaline, DMT, and other psychedelics that were distributed around the globe. Along with Tim Scully, Nick Sand was responsible for producing over 3 million hits of Orange Sunshine, a brand of LSD that was renowned for its quality and purity in the Sixties.

In fact, it was a DMT vision quest in the 60s that convinced Sand to dedicate his life to producing and distributing entheogens. He was the first underground chemist to synthesize DMT rather than extracting it from natural sources, and the first person to discover that the DMT freebase could be smoked. And as you’ll see, he is also a passionate thinker and very engaging writer.

Check out The Nexian, the first ever e-zine produced by members of DMT-Nexus. It’s a free PDF download with 56 pages of trip reports, horticultural advice, interviews, and DMT-inspired artworks by members of the Nexus community.

One feature that stands out to me is Jungle Stewing: An Interview with Antrocles. Antrocles is Antony Galvan, a DMT enthusiast who runs a healing retreat inspired by his work with the Secoya tribe of the Ecuadorian Amazon. He talks about the relationship between language and the psychedelic experience:

If there’s one thing I’ve really gleaned from these tribes is that if you’re going to work with these plants, do it right. I’ve met too many people who are just in it for the fireworks. […]

For a long time, I never put it together with the visual aspect of DMT, where I was being just so blown away by the visual aspect of it, and the symbolism of what I was being shown- I thought that was actually the important thing.

Hello friends. So you’ve decided it’s time to embark on a great adventure. Maybe some colorful friends turned you onto DMT. Or maybe you heard Joe Rogan mention it on his podcast. Welcome one, welcome all, and let us get down to the business of properly preparing for your ceremony and getting the most out of it. Because let’s be honest, “DMT: The Spirit Molecule” and those late nights watching YouTube videos have not taught you what you need to know.

A Treatise on Psychedelics Part 2/3: The Mystical Experience http://psychedelicfrontier.com/a-treatise-on-psychedelics-part-23-the-mystical-experience/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/a-treatise-on-psychedelics-part-23-the-mystical-experience/#comments Fri, 12 Jul 2013 18:32:19 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=1110 A Treatise on Psychedelics Part 2/3: The Mystical Experience

This guest post by Martijn Schirp continues from Part 1, discussing the Interdisciplinary Conference on Psychedelic Research that he attended. It was originally published on higHExistence.com.

If we recognize the plant as an autonomous power which enters in order to put roots and flowers in us, then we distance ourselves by several degrees from the skewed perspective which imagines that spirit (Geist) is the monopoly of human beings and doesn’t exist outside of them. A new world-picture has to follow the planetary leveling; that is the task which the next century will take up. –Ernst Jünger, The Plant as Autonomous Power.

Where are the liberating effects of these plants and chemicals to be found? Of course in the consciousness of their users and the technologies and wisdom they produce. But there is a lesser-known revolution going on. I was pleasantly surprised by Raph Borges’ talk about ethnobotanical research being done at an online community called DMT-Nexus.

Visionary collages by Eugenia Loli http://psychedelicfrontier.com/visionary-collages-by-eugenia-loli/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/visionary-collages-by-eugenia-loli/#comments Tue, 09 Jul 2013 13:00:35 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=1030 Visionary collages by Eugenia Loli

Eugenia Loli’s collages remind me very much of psychedelic exploration. The canny juxtapositions, spacey visuals, and surreal portraits of humanity all speak directly to my subconscious, which loves to throw around this kind of imagery when I’m dreaming or in a mystical state.

These psychedelic qualities are no accident. In the artist’s words:

I’m intrigued by DMT’s ability to make people more spiritual, and bring them closer to their true nature and potential. Some of my art tries to capture just that, rather than simply describe a trip. I’m not into making representational art, so I capture the revelations behind all the astonishing visuals.

Here’s a more recent piece, titled Lucy and DiMiTri. Eugenia offers a description:

The sky is empty and the land is bare. There’s nothing for us there. But there’s a roadway. The key to discover ourselves, and the universe at large, all which is within us.

DMT-esque animation: “1923 aka Heaven” http://psychedelicfrontier.com/dmt-esque-animation-1923-aka-heaven/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/dmt-esque-animation-1923-aka-heaven/#respond Thu, 30 May 2013 14:25:04 +0000 http://www.psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=788 DMT-esque animation: “1923 aka Heaven”

This short animation reminds me of a DMT voyage through some kind of cosmic power generator. From the Vimeo page:

1923 aka Heaven is one of two animation loops directed by Max Hattler, inspired by the work of French outsider artist Augustin Lesage. 1923 is based on Lesage’s painting ‘A Symbolic Composition of the Spiritual World’ from 1923.

I recommend fullscreen mode. And turn up the volume, the soundtrack is great.

The second animation mentioned is called ‘1925 aka Hell‘. The visuals aren’t as DMT-looking, but it’s still very trippy.

If the video wasn’t enough to remind you of adventures into hyperspace, how about the fact that it was inspired by a painting called “‘A Symbolic Composition of the Spiritual World”? With a title like that, it must be one hell (heaven?) of an artwork, right? Augustin Lesage does not disappoint. Click to enlarge.

DMT Found in the Pineal Glands of Live Rats http://psychedelicfrontier.com/dmt-found-pineal-glands-live-rats/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/dmt-found-pineal-glands-live-rats/#comments Sat, 25 May 2013 01:29:19 +0000 http://www.psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=742 DMT Found in the Pineal Glands of Live Rats

Cottonwood Research, a foundation dedicated to studying consciousness and headed by Rick Strassman, is publishing a study that confirms the existence (and, they argue, production) of dimethyltryptamine in the pineal glands of rats. This paves the way for further research to determine whether endogenous DMT in humans also originates in the pineal gland, as has been speculated by Strassman and others. From their website:

We’re excited to announce the acceptance for publication of a paper documenting the presence of DMT in the pineal glands of live rodents. The paper will appear in the journal Biomedical Chromatography and describes experiments that took place in Dr. Jimo Borjigin’s laboratory at the University of Michigan, where samples were collected…

The pineal gland has been an object of great interest regarding consciousness for thousands of years, and a pineal source of DMT would help support a role for this enigmatic gland in unusual states of consciousness.

Sacredness Is in the Eye of the Beholder http://psychedelicfrontier.com/sacredness-eye-beholder/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/sacredness-eye-beholder/#comments Wed, 17 Apr 2013 10:00:48 +0000 http://www.psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=321 Sacredness Is in the Eye of the Beholder

There is a logical fallacy that psychonauts tend to make called the Appeal to Tradition. Just as it sounds, this is when someone describes a particular method or system as superior because it is traditional. The truth, of course, is that a solution’s stature as a tradition has no bearing on its effectiveness. A tradition may be passed on for many generations and still remain fundamentally flawed.

Even psychonauts with the best of intentions commit this logical error. Having come to deeply respect a particular entheogenic tradition — for instance, the Amazonian ayahuasca ceremony — they insist that it is sacred. They begin to scoff at casual recreational users, claiming that the only proper way to ingest the “sacrament” is with a certain attitude or in the context of a certain tradition. “DMT is an ancient and sacred spiritual molecule,” they intone with grave voices (or what I imagine to be grave voices, as I read their posts on various forums).
