This story by Rachel Kaplan first appeared in the MAPS Winter Bulletin 2017.

As I sit in a field of tall green grasses, feeling the earth beneath me and listening to the songs of meadowlarks, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for not only being alive but for finally wanting to be alive. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for often feeling a sense of peace in my self and feeling connected with myself, with others and the world. These are all new experiences for me that I never believed where possible until now, after being a participant in the MDMA-assisted psychotherapy study in Boulder.

This last year, after integrating the healing that happened in my MDMA-assisted psychotherapy sessions, has been a drastic contrast to the rest of my life. For the majority of my life I prayed to die and fought suicidal urges as I struggled with complex PTSD.

Rick Doblin, Ph.D., is the founder and executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). He received his doctorate in public policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, where he wrote his dissertation on the regulation of the medical uses of psychedelics and marijuana. His professional goal is to help develop legal contexts for the beneficial uses of psychedelics and marijuana, primarily as prescription medicines but also for personal growth for otherwise healthy people, and eventually to become a legally licensed psychedelic therapist.

Why Dr. Bronner’s Soaps Is Donating $5 Million to MAPS http://psychedelicfrontier.com/dr-bronners-donating-maps/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/dr-bronners-donating-maps/#respond Tue, 06 Jun 2017 11:00:09 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3981 Why Dr. Bronner’s Soaps Is Donating $5 Million to MAPS

This essay by David Bronner, CEO of Dr. Bronner’s and Board Member of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, was first published in the MAPS Bulletin and on drbronner.com.

Our family company, Dr. Bronner’s, donates a lot of resources to social justice NGOs and campaigns, including over $1 million to various state-level cannabis legalization campaigns in 2016. Collectively, well north of $40 million was raised in the 2016 election cycle alone to end prohibition and stop the enormous waste of taxpayer and law enforcement resources from ruining the lives of upstanding citizens and their families. Even with the Trump administration, momentum is growing to recognize medical cannabis at the federal level and remove it from Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act. Now, we have the opportunity to legalize MDMA as a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medicine, to be available in all 50 states, for a total cost that is substantially less than what we as a movement are investing into legalizing medical and recreational cannabis.

This story by Andy Gold first appeared in the MAPS Bulletin, Winter 2016 edition.

I went for my first MDMA-assisted psychotherapy session on November 30, 2015, the Monday after Thanksgiving. Was it really a coincidence that the colonoscopy which found a malignant tumor in my colon some years earlier had also taken place on the Monday after Thanksgiving? I think not. Full circle, indeed.

I arrived at the site in Marin County, Calif., where the session was to take place, at 9:30 in the morning. One of the study requirements is that you do the sessions while fasting. Someone also has to bring you to the site and pick you up. My adult son dropped me off and took a couple of minutes to meet Dr. Phil Wolfson and Julane Andries (the study co-therapists) and see their place. I think he was suitably impressed by the location, and comfortable with the idea of his father tripping in that environment, under the care of those people.

Veteran Explains How MDMA Therapy Helped Him Overcome PTSD http://psychedelicfrontier.com/veteran-mdma-therapy-ptsd/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/veteran-mdma-therapy-ptsd/#comments Tue, 22 Jul 2014 11:43:51 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3002 Veteran Explains How MDMA Therapy Helped Him Overcome PTSD

In a recent “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit, Iraq War veteran Tony Macie opened up about how he overcame his treatment-resistant PTSD through experimental MDMA-assisted therapy. Here’s his introduction:

My name is Tony Macie, and I am a retired Sergeant of the U.S. Army. I spent 15 long months in Iraq during the surge in 2006 and 2007. When I returned home from the war, I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) resulting from a lot of issues ranging from what I experienced during combat and some of the disconnect with my brothers in arms when I transitioned out of the military.

My symptoms of PTSD became “treatment-resistant” after the medication and psychotherapy that the Veterans Affairs provided was ineffective. I began to search for alternative treatment methods, and that’s when I heard about the trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy to treat PTSD.

My Interview with Rick Doblin, Psychedelic Pioneer http://psychedelicfrontier.com/interview-rick-doblin-founder-maps/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/interview-rick-doblin-founder-maps/#comments Tue, 01 Jul 2014 13:33:02 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3018 My Interview with Rick Doblin, Psychedelic Pioneer

I recently had the good fortune of meeting my psychedelic hero, Rick Doblin, the founder and president of the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies. What’s more, he graciously agreed to an on-camera interview. I asked him about the origins of MAPS, the Russian ban of methadone in Crimean addiction clinics, New Zealand’s new regulatory framework for legal highs, MAPS’ recent partnership with the military to research MDMA as a treatment for PTSD, and much more.

My favorite part is when Rick tells the story of taking LSD on his twenty-first birthday. He heard a siren and became convinced that the Russians were bombing Tampa, and that he was about to die. The story of what he decided to do with his remaining time on Earth is both hilarious and touching. You can find that clip in text format at the bottom of the page, or in the video at 42:30.

Good-bye Sasha: Legendary Chemist Alexander Shulgin Dies at 88 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/good-bye-sasha-chemist-alexander-shulgin-dies/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/good-bye-sasha-chemist-alexander-shulgin-dies/#comments Tue, 03 Jun 2014 07:08:48 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3088 Good-bye Sasha: Legendary Chemist Alexander Shulgin Dies at 88

Dr. Alexander Shulgin, the influential and beloved psychedelic pioneer, has passed away at the age of 88. He died of liver cancer on Monday, 2 June, surrounded by family and friends at his home in California. Shulgin had suffered declining health in the past few years, including a stroke and the onset of dementia beginning in 2010. About his final days, his wife Ann wrote:

Sasha knows that he’s dying, but that doesn’t bother him. He doesn’t know he has cancer of the liver, and there’s no need for him to know; that knowledge would give him nothing useful. After all, as he has said, “We all have to die of something!”

Thanks to all of you for your support all these years. We appreciate every single dollar and every note or e-mail. You have kept our Tibetan and British caregivers here with him, and he has been surrounded by love and a lot of laughter, due to your help and compassion.

Yesterday, Rick Doblin and ten other MAPS staff members engaged in an online “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit. The turnout was phenomenal. Questions ran the gamut from personal (“Have you ever tried psychedelics?”) to political (“Will the legalization of psychedelics will come next after marijuana?”) and much more.

Several posters asked about minimizing the risk of MDMA toxicity, while others were curious about treatments for cluster headaches, depression, autism, and other conditions. A couple people even asked if MAPS accepts Bitcoin (as of yesterday, they do). As you might expect, the answers from MAPS staff were incredibly informative and insightful.

It can be a hassle to sift through all the replies on Reddit, so I have copied the questions and arranged them by topic below. This was a live online interview, so please excuse any typos made in the questions and answers. My omissions and minor changes are indicated in square brackets.

Help Heal Trauma Survivors by Supporting MDMA Research http://psychedelicfrontier.com/help-heal-trauma-survivors-supporting-mdma-research/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/help-heal-trauma-survivors-supporting-mdma-research/#respond Mon, 18 Nov 2013 07:45:48 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=1657 Help Heal Trauma Survivors by Supporting MDMA Research

MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, has been an instrumental force in psychedelic research and advocacy since its formation in 1986. In my opinion, this non-profit organization has done more to establish psychedelics as legitimate medicines than anyone else in the world.

Their biggest project is proving the safety and effectiveness of MDMA-assisted therapy as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They have performed a number of studies around the world indicating its effectiveness — even with the one-third of PTSD patients who do not respond adequately to other treatments.

As you can imagine, MAPS does not have the budget of Big Pharma. The non-profit depends on private donations for all of its research, and clearing the FDA hurdles to establish MDMA as a legal medicine will take millions of dollars in the coming years. In order to help fund their ongoing studies, MAPS is looking to raise $50,000 with an Indiegogo campaign.
