One of the most intriguing film and music festivals is coming to New York City, and it’s all about tripping: The Psychedelic Film and Music Festival is billed as “an ode to the exploration of altered states of consciousness created by music, art, film and psychedelia.” Its mission is “to explore the outer limits of consciousness with respect for others and the planet. To create a new paradigm for the adventurous.”

Highlights include a performance by psych-horror soundtrack musician Simon Boswell, a talk with ethnopharmacologist and botanist Dennis McKenna (brother of the late Terence McKenna), the world premiere of comedian Shane Mauss’s new film, Psychonautics, along with a post-screening discussions with Shane himself, and the world premiere of the feature documentary From Shock to Awe, about two combat veterans healing trauma with psychedelics.

First Peek at My New Book ‘Magic Medicine’ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/new-book-magic-medicine/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/new-book-magic-medicine/#respond Sun, 15 Apr 2018 13:00:35 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=4854 First Peek at My New Book ‘Magic Medicine’

It’s finally here! Two years ago I started researching and writing Magic Medicine: A Trip Through the Intoxicating History and Modern-Day Use of Psychedelic Plants & Substances. After much tweaking and editing, the first printed copy is here! (The public release date is June 5th.)

From the very beginning, I wanted the book to more than just fascinating in its subject matter — I wanted it to be a beautiful object, something you would be proud to have on your nightstand or bookshelf. I wanted a book that would demand your attention and spark conversations, a book you could not help but pick up and thumb through, one that would make the perfect gift for that consciousness-curious person in your life.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I could not be happier with how the printed book came out!

Coming Back to Life http://psychedelicfrontier.com/coming-back-life-mdma-psychotherapy/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/coming-back-life-mdma-psychotherapy/#respond Wed, 07 Feb 2018 15:45:29 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=4437 Coming Back to Life

This story by Rachel Kaplan first appeared in the MAPS Winter Bulletin 2017.

As I sit in a field of tall green grasses, feeling the earth beneath me and listening to the songs of meadowlarks, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for not only being alive but for finally wanting to be alive. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for often feeling a sense of peace in my self and feeling connected with myself, with others and the world. These are all new experiences for me that I never believed where possible until now, after being a participant in the MDMA-assisted psychotherapy study in Boulder.

This last year, after integrating the healing that happened in my MDMA-assisted psychotherapy sessions, has been a drastic contrast to the rest of my life. For the majority of my life I prayed to die and fought suicidal urges as I struggled with complex PTSD.

Veteran Explains How MDMA Therapy Helped Him Overcome PTSD http://psychedelicfrontier.com/veteran-mdma-therapy-ptsd/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/veteran-mdma-therapy-ptsd/#comments Tue, 22 Jul 2014 11:43:51 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3002 Veteran Explains How MDMA Therapy Helped Him Overcome PTSD

In a recent “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit, Iraq War veteran Tony Macie opened up about how he overcame his treatment-resistant PTSD through experimental MDMA-assisted therapy. Here’s his introduction:

My name is Tony Macie, and I am a retired Sergeant of the U.S. Army. I spent 15 long months in Iraq during the surge in 2006 and 2007. When I returned home from the war, I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) resulting from a lot of issues ranging from what I experienced during combat and some of the disconnect with my brothers in arms when I transitioned out of the military.

My symptoms of PTSD became “treatment-resistant” after the medication and psychotherapy that the Veterans Affairs provided was ineffective. I began to search for alternative treatment methods, and that’s when I heard about the trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy to treat PTSD.

My Interview with Rick Doblin, Psychedelic Pioneer http://psychedelicfrontier.com/interview-rick-doblin-founder-maps/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/interview-rick-doblin-founder-maps/#comments Tue, 01 Jul 2014 13:33:02 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3018 My Interview with Rick Doblin, Psychedelic Pioneer

I recently had the good fortune of meeting my psychedelic hero, Rick Doblin, the founder and president of the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies. What’s more, he graciously agreed to an on-camera interview. I asked him about the origins of MAPS, the Russian ban of methadone in Crimean addiction clinics, New Zealand’s new regulatory framework for legal highs, MAPS’ recent partnership with the military to research MDMA as a treatment for PTSD, and much more.

My favorite part is when Rick tells the story of taking LSD on his twenty-first birthday. He heard a siren and became convinced that the Russians were bombing Tampa, and that he was about to die. The story of what he decided to do with his remaining time on Earth is both hilarious and touching. You can find that clip in text format at the bottom of the page, or in the video at 42:30.

“Ask Me Anything” Reddit Interview with Rick Doblin & MAPS http://psychedelicfrontier.com/ask-me-anything-reddit-interview-rick-doblin-maps/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/ask-me-anything-reddit-interview-rick-doblin-maps/#comments Wed, 04 Dec 2013 16:33:14 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=1791 “Ask Me Anything” Reddit Interview with Rick Doblin & MAPS

Yesterday, Rick Doblin and ten other MAPS staff members engaged in an online “Ask Me Anything” session on Reddit. The turnout was phenomenal. Questions ran the gamut from personal (“Have you ever tried psychedelics?”) to political (“Will the legalization of psychedelics will come next after marijuana?”) and much more.

Several posters asked about minimizing the risk of MDMA toxicity, while others were curious about treatments for cluster headaches, depression, autism, and other conditions. A couple people even asked if MAPS accepts Bitcoin (as of yesterday, they do). As you might expect, the answers from MAPS staff were incredibly informative and insightful.

It can be a hassle to sift through all the replies on Reddit, so I have copied the questions and arranged them by topic below. This was a live online interview, so please excuse any typos made in the questions and answers. My omissions and minor changes are indicated in square brackets.

Help Heal Trauma Survivors by Supporting MDMA Research http://psychedelicfrontier.com/help-heal-trauma-survivors-supporting-mdma-research/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/help-heal-trauma-survivors-supporting-mdma-research/#respond Mon, 18 Nov 2013 07:45:48 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=1657 Help Heal Trauma Survivors by Supporting MDMA Research

MAPS, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, has been an instrumental force in psychedelic research and advocacy since its formation in 1986. In my opinion, this non-profit organization has done more to establish psychedelics as legitimate medicines than anyone else in the world.

Their biggest project is proving the safety and effectiveness of MDMA-assisted therapy as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They have performed a number of studies around the world indicating its effectiveness — even with the one-third of PTSD patients who do not respond adequately to other treatments.

As you can imagine, MAPS does not have the budget of Big Pharma. The non-profit depends on private donations for all of its research, and clearing the FDA hurdles to establish MDMA as a legal medicine will take millions of dollars in the coming years. In order to help fund their ongoing studies, MAPS is looking to raise $50,000 with an Indiegogo campaign.

Psychedelics Linked to Lower Risk of Mental Illness http://psychedelicfrontier.com/psychedelics-lower-risk-mental-illness/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/psychedelics-lower-risk-mental-illness/#comments Wed, 28 Aug 2013 10:11:41 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=1318 Psychedelics Linked to Lower Risk of Mental Illness

It seems that all the best news about psychedelics lately is coming from scientists. You know, those people whose job it is to discover the truth even if it flies in the face of cultural and legal prejudices? Turns out the truth about psychedelics is not so convenient for those who insist on banning them.

In a new study, a Norwegian neuroscience team has found that use of psychedelic drugs is not associated with increased risk of mental health problems. In fact, psychedelic users were shown to have a lower risk of mental health issues, including psychosis, anxiety, mood disorders, social phobia, PTSD, and others. More specifically, people who used psilocybin, mescaline, or LSD throughout their lives, or LSD within the past year, were shown to have lower rates of psychological distress, outpatient mental health treatment, and psychiatric medications.

This doesn’t mean that psychedelic trips never cause mental problems.
