Today’s guest post is by Mike Jay, the celebrated author of High Society, an illustrated global history of drugs, among other books. His essays have appeared in Aeon Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and the London Review of Books, covering topics as diverse as drugs and creativity, flying potions, influencing machines, brainwashing, and opium pipes.

In February 1758 the 90-year-old Charles Lullin, a retired Swiss civil servant whose sight had been progressively failing since a cataract operation five years before, began to see considerably more than he had become accustomed to. For the next several months he was visited in his apartment by a silent procession of figures, invisible to everyone but him: young men in magnificent cloaks, perfectly coiffured ladies carrying boxes on their heads, girls dancing in silks and ribbons. These visions were recorded and published in 1760 by his grandson, the naturalist Charles Bonnet, after whom the syndrome of hallucinations in the elderly and partially sighted would much later be named.

The vine has spread her tendrils across the world and a genuine archaic revival was underway. My bags were packed, South America beckoned, and the ancient mysteries of the rainforest awaited. I wanted in on it…

Rak Razam

I sat down with Rak Razam, the writer, producer, and main subject of the new film Aya: Awakenings, for a 45-minute interview covering everything from the legacy of Terence McKenna to the intense 5-MeO-DMT trip that occurs at the climax of the film.

The documentary, an adaptation of the book of the same name, covers the ayahuasca tourism phenomenon through the lens of Rak’s personal experiences in Peru.

The Interview

Stream it here or download the mp3.

Rak describes his film as an etheogenic journey for the audience:

There’s this synesthesia that happens in the film, where because of the narration taking you on the emotional left-brain journey, and the soundscapes and the visuals, it hits all the right spots of our sensory modalities and triggers a shamanic reaction.

Steve & Steve, a brilliant web comic about an acid trip http://psychedelicfrontier.com/steve-steve-a-brilliant-web-comic-about-an-acid-trip/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/steve-steve-a-brilliant-web-comic-about-an-acid-trip/#respond Tue, 15 Oct 2013 12:00:21 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=1587 Steve & Steve, a brilliant web comic about an acid trip

Steve & Steve, an online graphic novel by Patrick Farley, follows fictionalized versions of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak as they embark on an LSD trip in Silicon Valley, 1975. Together they discuss lost love, the Cold War, the history of human evolution, and much more. The second “issue” was just released, and it’s just as incredible as the first.

Patrick Farley is also the creative force behind electricsheepcomix.com, perhaps best known for  bringing Terence McKenna’s “Stoned Ape” theory to life in the form of an animated comic called The First Word. Check it out, it’s just as trippy as it sounds!

Golem, a cerebral short film about human culture http://psychedelicfrontier.com/golem-a-cerebral-short-film-about-human-culture/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/golem-a-cerebral-short-film-about-human-culture/#respond Mon, 09 Sep 2013 16:23:18 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=1347 Golem, a cerebral short film about human culture

Golem is a short film by Patrick Mccue & Tobias Wiesner. It’s hard to describe, but the filmmakers say it’s based on ideas of “freedom and curiosity, fear and security, abstraction and fiction, the lack of accessibility in face of unknowing and the need for generating meaning.”

Watching it, I couldn’t help but think of how very psychedelic these topics are — not because they’re “far out, man,” but because they are important. These are exactly the kinds of big-picture revelations that cross my mind while in a state of heightened awareness.

Thoughts like these–whether inspired by an intense conversation, a mind-opening trip, or a beautiful short film like Golem–can make everything else seem small in comparison. How can I get caught up in television dramas and other diversions when the grand themes of humanity are being played out? Golem, like a good acid trip, reminds me to think bigger.
