It sure seems like psychedelics are finally going mainstream. Michael Pollan, the author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma and The Botany of Desire, turns his attention to psychedelic science and medicine in his latest book, How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence.

Pollan went on The Late Show to talk about tripping and the ego with Stephen Colbert. As an “immersion journalist,” Pollan decided to try LSD, psilocybin, and 5-MeO-DMT — a compound from the venom of the Sonoran desert toad — as research for his book. About his psilocybin trip, Pollan says:

I had this experience of ego dissolution. My sense of self fell apart. It was like a bunch of post-its being blown in the wind. And then I saw myself out on the landscape like paint.

Carl Jung on Why You Should Be Wary of Psychedelics http://psychedelicfrontier.com/carl-jung-wary-psychedelics/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/carl-jung-wary-psychedelics/#respond Sun, 13 May 2018 12:00:05 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=4960 Carl Jung on Why You Should Be Wary of Psychedelics

Voiceclub is a Melbourne-based podcast on psychedelics and philosophy that’s worth digging into. In addition to regular audio podcasts, Voiceclub is now producing excellent video snippets on its Youtube channel. The latest video discusses the danger of psychedelics through the lens of Carl Jung.

From the video:

You really best beware of what it is you don’t understand about yourself. Because what you don’t understand about yourself — well, it has you, for good or ill. And so, wisdom of the kind that Jung puts forward is really not to be brushed aside. This is to say little more than where there’s potential there’s danger, and we’d do well to keep both sides of the coin in mind.

In a letter he wrote in 1954, C. G. Jung said he was “profoundly mistrustful of the pure ‘gifts of the gods'” such as mescaline, saying that “you pay very dearly for them.” Elaborating, he writes:

I should hate the thought that I had touched on the sphere where the paint is made that colours the world, where the light is created that makes shine the splendour of the dawn, the lines and shapes of all form, the sound that fills the orbit, the thought that illuminates the darkness of the void.

In this incredible, low-key little video (just shy of 3 minutes), Dr Dan Brown, discusses the nature of awareness and self. Dr. Brown is a Harvard clinical psychologist and Tibetan Buddhist scholar, and the video is made complete with ink and pencil animations by Claudia Biçen and music by Marcus Ostermiller. Fans of Alan Watts will definitely appreciate it.

Video: Can Ketamine Help You Reduce Problem Drinking? http://psychedelicfrontier.com/video-can-ketamine-help-reduce-problem-drinking/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/video-can-ketamine-help-reduce-problem-drinking/#respond Tue, 19 Sep 2017 11:00:08 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=4149 Video: Can Ketamine Help You Reduce Problem Drinking?

In this episode of Vice Video’s High Society series, a young man embarks on a full-blown ketamine trip in the hopes of reducing his compulsive drinking habit. It’s part of a controlled study led by Dr. Ravi Das, a psychopharmacologist at University College London, to examine whether ketamine can weaken certain memory connections — and thereby loosen the grip of addictive substances over people’s minds.

From the Vice Video description:

Timmy Davis is not an alcoholic. But like many twenty-something students, he’s worried he may be drinking too much.

Timmy has volunteered for Dr. Das’ latest experiment, in which 90 volunteers will receive a ketamine infusion in a controlled setting. Timmy is no stranger to psychedelics. But could a drug he has previously encountered recreationally really help him cut down his drinking?

Deleted “Avatar” Scene Shows Hallucinogenic Vision Quest http://psychedelicfrontier.com/deleted-avatar-scene-shows-hallucinogenic-vision-quest/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/deleted-avatar-scene-shows-hallucinogenic-vision-quest/#comments Mon, 08 May 2017 12:10:15 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3946 Deleted “Avatar” Scene Shows Hallucinogenic Vision Quest

Did you know the script of James Cameron’s Avatar, the 3D blockbuster from 2009, originally called for a full-on psychedelic vision quest? The scene must have gotten cut fairly late in production, because it was filmed with live actors and animation had already begun. The CGI renders were left in a blocky, unfinished state, but it’s easy to tell what’s going on.

Titled “The Dream Hunt,” the scene is a fascinating glimpse into the spirituality of Pandora’s native Na’vi culture. The main character, Jake Sulley, agrees to take part in the initiation ceremony, in which he must take potent psychedelics in order to become a man.

“The Na’vi say every person is born twice,” explains Jake. “The second time is when you earn your place among the people — forever.”

A communal and deeply spiritual ceremony, the scene reflects a clear influence from indigenous medicine ceremonies here on Earth.

New Video from Jason Silva: ‘Drugs As Tools For Spirituality’ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/video-jason-silva-drugs-spirituality/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/video-jason-silva-drugs-spirituality/#comments Fri, 23 Jan 2015 18:12:58 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3646 New Video from Jason Silva: ‘Drugs As Tools For Spirituality’

“The new space is inner space,” says Jason Silva in his new video. It’s the latest edition in his series of thought-provoking short-films called Shots of Awe, which continues to live up to its name. This episode focuses on MAPS — the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies — and the importance of set and setting in maximizing the potential of a psychedelic session. He name-drops Timothy Leary, who stressed the importance of preparing a positive tripping environment for yourself.

“You are immediately plunged into a dialogue with your own subconscious,” Silva says. Meanwhile, “The world becomes like a sensurround system. The fidelity, the resolution of the input signals get boosted so all of the sudden you are overwhelmed, almost eclipsed by the signals coming in. You are like a mind in flight.”

Check it out below, and let me know what you think in the comments!

Psychedelic DJ Conjures a New Reality in ‘Plastic Flowers’ Video http://psychedelicfrontier.com/psychedelic-dj-plastic-flowers/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/psychedelic-dj-plastic-flowers/#comments Tue, 14 Oct 2014 11:33:53 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=3014 Psychedelic DJ Conjures a New Reality in ‘Plastic Flowers’ Video

This short video starts way, way out in the vast cosmos, then zooms in to a dreary hospital bed where a man lies comatose. But the patient’s mind is far from quiet. A DJ stands at a turntable, spinning up a new reality filled with colored bubbles and a giant four-armed sky god.

A testament to the creative power of music and imagination, all in under 3 minutes. Is this what dreams are made of?

“Room 8” — The Ending of this Short Film is Mind-Blowing http://psychedelicfrontier.com/room-8-ending-film-mind-blowing/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/room-8-ending-film-mind-blowing/#comments Mon, 05 May 2014 11:41:17 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=2851 “Room 8” — The Ending of this Short Film is Mind-Blowing

This 7-minute film blew me away. At  first the stark tone and lighting drew me in. Then things started getting trippy in Room 8 and I couldn’t look away.

It’s a fantastic film with echoes of Escher, Borges, Christopher Nolan, and Richard Kelly. (You probably know M.C. Escher and Christopher Nolan, but Jorge Luis Borges was an Argentinian writer whose incredible stories often featured mirrors, mazes, and infinity. Richard Kelly is the director of Donnie Darko and The Box, two very trippy movies.)

Definitely hit full screen and pay attention for this one.

Incredible as it may be, I don’t think I’d want to watch it while tripping. That drawer would haunt me!

If you liked this, you’ll get a kick out of Christopher Nolan’s student film Doodlebug, which probably influenced this work.

Jason Silva video: Psychedelics are “Technologies of Ecstasy” http://psychedelicfrontier.com/jason-silva-video-psychedelics-technologies-of-ecstasy/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/jason-silva-video-psychedelics-technologies-of-ecstasy/#respond Wed, 12 Feb 2014 07:18:24 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=2321 Jason Silva video: Psychedelics are “Technologies of Ecstasy”

Jason Silva does it again. The latest episode in his “Shots of Awe” series considers psychedelics as “technologies of ecstasy.” In the short clip, he blows your mind while elaborating on the thoughts of Mircea Eliade, Erik Davis, and others:

[Psychedelics are] mankind’s cognitive toolkit, agents of psychic transformation we’ve been engaging in for tens of thousands of years to transform the perceptions of the bodymind, hacking our awareness and our perceptions, that evanescent flux of sensation and perception that is, in a way, all we have and all we are.

He goes on to describe the importance of shamanism in human culture: “That has always been the role of the shaman, to unplug us and to show us a bigger, wider, more far-reaching universe that goes beyond what the eye can see.”

Check it out, it’ll only take two minutes! Or four, if you immediately watch it again like I did.

Video: Dogs tripping on cane toads in Australia http://psychedelicfrontier.com/video-dogs-tripping-cane-toads-australia/ http://psychedelicfrontier.com/video-dogs-tripping-cane-toads-australia/#comments Thu, 19 Dec 2013 13:29:52 +0000 http://psychedelicfrontier.com/?p=1866 Video: Dogs tripping on cane toads in Australia

Apparently some dogs in Queensland, Australia have taken to getting high on cane toad secretions. Surprisingly, the dogs seem to enjoy the experience, repeatedly hunting down the animals just to get a fix. After licking the backs of the toads, the pets exhibit all the signs of doggy tripping — vacant stares, not responding to their owners, and reacting to nonexistent cues.

Cane toad secretions contain bufotenin, a psychedelic tryptamine related to DMT. But they also contain highly toxic chemicals that can cause vasoconstriction and death, so licking toads is generally a bad idea. Some dogs have died from cane toad poisoning, but others — like Dobby in the video below — are able to consume just enough to have a psychedelic trip without getting poisoned.

The video, an excerpt from the documentary Cane Toads: The Conquest, is both informative and hilarious. Dobby seems to be in doggy heaven.
